Why Provide Group Health Insurance Benefits
Small Group Reform Laws protect Small Employer Groups of 2-50 employees. Small Group coverage is guaranteed and can not be terminated unless for fraud or non payment of premium. Medical conditions can be rated but coverage can not be declined for the group. Other Small Group Reform Laws including Mental Health, Maternity Coverage and Pre-Existing Condition Limitations are available to protect your Employees.
Who qualifies?
Idaho Business owners plus one employee qualify for Small Group Health Insurance Benefits. Essentially a minimum of 2 employees. Small groups can be written down to one employee if all other employees have qualified other coverage.
Small Employer Groups of 2-19 employees typically must have 85% percent participation from all full time (FT) employees who work 30 hours or more per week. Mid-Sized Employer Groups of 20 plus employees must have a minimum participation of 75% of all full time eligible employees.
Probationary Periods?
Employers can set Probationary Periods of 0, 30, 60, 90 or up to 365 days. Employees must meet this probationary period prior to becoming eligible for health insurance benefits. Once an employee has met their probationary period, they are eligible to join the health insurance policy the first of the following month otherwise they will waive their right to coverage under the policy until the Policy Renewal Date or Annual Open Enrollment.
Are there Pre-existing Limitations?
Pre-existing condition exclusions are limited by the amount of time an employee has had other qualified coverage without a break in coverage of more than 63 days. If a break in coverage is more than 63 days, a pre-existing condition exclusion can be placed on the member looking back 6 months for any condition or treatment received in the last 6 months and not covered under the policy for 12 months. Maternity can not be excluded as a pre-existing condition. The more members inside a group the better. More members help to spread health risk and lower insurance premiums.
